{"id":3225,"date":"2022-07-05T13:40:26","date_gmt":"2022-07-05T13:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usrl.cyi.ac.cy\/?p=3225"},"modified":"2023-08-02T12:24:23","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T12:24:23","slug":"usrl-first-in-cyprus-to-be-granted-with-operational-authorizations-for-fixed-wing-and-multirotor-unmanned-aerial-systems-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usrl.cyi.ac.cy\/?p=3225","title":{"rendered":"CARE-C participates in the European Space Agency\u2019s Campaign in Cape Verde for the calibration \/ validation of the Aeolus satellite"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Teams from the Climate and Atmosphere Research\nCenter (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute, were in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, as part\nof ASKOS, the Aeolus satellite calibration \/ validation Campaign, coordinated\nby the <strong>National\nObservatory of Athens (NOA) <\/strong>and funded by the <strong>European Space Agency (ESA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aeolus is the first satellite mission to acquire\nprofiles of Earth\u2019s wind on a global scale, with its observations being used to\nimprove weather forecasts and climate models.\nThe ASKOS Campaign is\ndeploying advanced ground-based remote sensing and surface\/airborne in situ\ninstrumentation to provide observations\nof aerosol, clouds, water vapor and wind. During the ASKOS Campaign, Aeolus unmanned flights were performed by unmanned aircrafts developed at CARE-C\u2019s Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) in Cyprus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These aircrafts were equipped with atmospheric sensors measuring particle size-distribution and orientation and are able to collect samples of dust for further analysis. Saharan dust electricification measurements were also performed with advanced sensors on-board radiosondes.
